Coal Hills shrinks

1880-1969

Coal Hills is a place that has faded from the maps. It is clearly marked in 1880 (6 houses), same in 1899, smaller lettering in 1922, unmarked in 1969. The best OS ref I can get for it is SK 28683 55328 (using the excellent mapping system on www.geograph.org.uk/photo/350337) The line of 6 houses was between Greymare Mine, Coal Hills Quarry and the Cromford and High Peak Railway. Maybe it was overwhelmed by the Quarry? Coal Hills was first mentioned in 1258 as "Colhul" in Cameron. I imagine your Anthony Spencer is the chap on www.wirksworth.org.uk/C81-35.htm#W720a, his father lived next door and he was born in Coal Hills. Anthony senior is mentioned in the 1841 census, see http://www.wirksworth.org.uk/C41-08.htm#Md013d and in the Wirksworth Parish Registers as C 1819dec12 SPENCER Anthony=(son)James/Sarah(Middleton)[Miner],dob=1816sep15 Some photos near Coal Hills are on http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2861365 Hope this helps, John Palmer, Dorset, England Author of Wirksworth website www.wirksworth.org.uk
