Sale at Wirksworth Hall

1903

Details of a contents Sale in 1903 by the unfortunate Wirksworth Hall, once
next to the Parish Church in the centre of the town.
The standard of living portrayed is probably beyond many readers'experience.
Choice items are: 26 person Dining Table, 2,136 bottles of vintage Port,
180 bottles of Champagne, 244 piece Dinner Service, 7 octave Grandpiano.

Other aspects of Wirksworth Hall
can be seen at:

  • Wirksworth Hall Sale 1903
  • The reasons for the sale are not yet clear. Henry CHANDOS-POLE-GELL died in 1902, Cicely was his first child of 5 daughters by his first marriage, and her husband Edmund died in 1896, see GELL pedigree, and Hopton Hall. However, the fortunes of this family are so complicated that the author is unable to give a single reason for the 1903 sale.
