8 inches high, what was it used for?

"J.T.MARSH Wirksworth" was probably Joseph MARSH
(1834-1909) who lived his whole life in Wirksworth.
His father was William (1801-1870), a grocer, Tea Dealer
and later Bailiff to the Court of Requests. [Wikipedia asserts
that this Court died out in the Civil War - but see
here and
here].
The first son of
10 children, Joseph seems to have inherited his father's
Grocery business in Greenhill, which he ran until he died
in 1909 (without offspring).
Joseph probably followed
William as a Tea Dealer, so perhaps the fine "Ginger Jar"
was used as a Tea Jar, with perhaps a very big cork to keep the Tea
healthy?
Joseph and his wife Eliza had 16 brothers and sisters between them,
were birthday cards invented in those days?
This "Utility jar" is for sale on Ebay at £145 or more.
Wish I could afford it.
