Hello John
The 24 soldiers listed below are men with Wirksworth and district connections,
of whom 23 were taken prisoner during the Great War. The list is not claimed
to be comprehensive since the recorded details of the men captured was minimal
in the early years of the war, and hence non of the Wirksworth men who might
have been involved in the retreat from Mons in 1914 or the battle of the
Somme in 1916 have been found.
In the years 1917 & 1918 the records of newly captured men become much more
detailed and included date and place of birth of captives.
If you wish to use the material on your Wirksworth Website then please do so.
Best wishes
David Wardman

Great War Prisoners
The International Committee of the Red Cross have released onto the
internet the names of British prisoners of war held in German camps
during the 1914 - 18 war. The lists had been compiled by the German
authorities and passed to the ICRC, who created a card index system
from which they were hopefully able to answer queries from relatives
in the UK. The ICRC augmented the card index system by including names
of missing soldiers as a result of queries from the UK.
"The search for Repatriation dates is ongoing" says David Wardman.
