Grange Mill Post Office-1911 |
This village Post Office opened in 1892 and the sub-postmaster was
John Roose, a local farmer. More details of the
P.O below. Roose ran the P.O. part time until he died
in 1917, when it was taken over by
Charles Webster (another local farmer,
his dau-in-law's brother, and probably his assistant sub-postmaster),
who probably retired in 1942. W.J.Heathcote, also a farmer, ran the office
in 1967. The Post Office finally closed around 1970.
The building is in the village of Grangemill, on the E side of the
B5056 which runs N towards Winster. The OS ref is SK-24397-57712.

Grange Mill (or Ivonbrook Grange) is a hamlet at the western extremity of the
Via Gellia valley approximately 3 miles south east from Bakewell.
The earliest reference to postal affairs is in a directory for 1888 which
shows letters being delivered from Middleton (Wirksworth) on Wednsdays and
Saturdays. By 1891 deliveries were daily at 9 am. The post office opened in
January 1892, the first handstamp being issued on 31 December 1891. The first
sub-postmaster was John Roose. A directory for 1895 shows the mail arriving at
9 am and departing at 4.50 pm. Postal Orders were issued but not paid. The
directory also stated that letters should be addressed "Ivonbrook Grange,
Wirksworth S.O., Derby".
By 1904 Postal Orders were paid as well as issued and by 1912 a wall box had
been erected at Ible.
A directory for 1922 shows Charles Webster, farmer, as sub-postmaster, he was
still in office when the 1941 directory, the last to give names, was issued.
In 1967, Mr W J Heathcote, farmer, was sub-postmaster. He had taken over
the post in 1955. The office was closed c1970.
Issued 31 Dec 1891
