Postcard from Beesley to Barton 1909
Edith Annie Beesley 1880- was the daughter of Henry and Annie Maria, and
sister of Lawrence 1878- . Henry was Bank Manager of Moore & Robinson's
Banking Co Ltd, in St John St, Wirksworth. Lawrence taught Science at
Wirksworth Grammar School, and in 1912 survived the sinking of the
Titanic and was one of the first to write about his experiences.
Eliza Barton 1850-1914 was daughter of Francis and Ann. Francis was an
agent for the Cromford and High Peak Railway, later Railway Secretary,
and then a coal merchant. Eliza became a schoolmistress at the private
school at Causeway House, Causeway, Wirksworth. She never married.
It is very likely that Eliza Barton taught Edith Beesley at Causeway House.
The Beesley family lived very close to the private school, and the families
probably knew each other socially.
In 1912 Edith's brother Lawrence became well known nationally by surviving
the Titanic sinking, and being one of the first to write a book about his
experiences. More can be found about his life on:
