The OLDFIELD family

David Wardman writes:
I was interested to read the article on overcrowded houses in Wirksworth. From the raw statistics of the census the reader may infer that the families were living in dire circumstances. The large group picture is of the Oldfield household, who are mentioned in the article on overcrowding and who feature in the Wardman Pedigree, photographed in the well tended garden of their house in the Dale. I wonder if there exists a photograph of a current family in Wirksworth which includes 8 children, the 5 eldest boys being dressed in 3 piece suites, white shirt, stud collar and tie?

The second photograph is of Josh Oldfield and his wife Julia. Josh Oldfield married Julia Else during the Great War, and was killed in action on 5/10/1918 whilst serving with the Sherwood Foresters and is buried in the Guizancourt Farm Cemetery. Julia subsequently married Oliver Flint and their daughter married Stanley Phillips, one of the sons of the haulier Walter H Phillips.
