Moor Cottage, Wirksworth

A delightful cottage near the present-day B5035 running over Wirksworth Moor from Wirksworth to the River Derwent at Whatstandwell. Close by the cottage are Moor Cottage Farm and Wigwell Grange, and a cross-road called "Top-o-the Moor". Moor Cottage is next to Moor Cottage Farm at SK 301-543. Tennant farmers living at the cottage were William Shaw 1851, George Mellor 1861, George Wood 1871, George Mellor 1881, George Wood 1891 and George Wood 1901
Neil France has been the greatest help in locating this cottage. It is believed the last tenant farmer at Moor Cottage was Arthur Wheeldon, who died recently aged 83. The cottage changed hands at auction, and is now awaiting planning permission.
