Gorsey Bank, Wirksworth
The hamlet of Gorsey Bank has changed very little in the past hundred years. In the foreground is Providence Mill, built around 1885 and was surrounded by houses. In 1890 the mill was powered by a gas engine, which was probably fed from the local gasworks in Warmbrook.
A sawmill mentioned in 1823 was previously on this site. To the left of the picture was a wooded area, some of which was cut down when the council houses were built in 1926-27. On the left was a shop that is obscured by a tree in this picture. At this time W.Brooks ran the shop and this valuable store continued trading up to 1978.
