In answer to my question "Where did you get your name from, Mum?"
she used to answer "I don't really know, I think from someone
who was in the news at the time". In 2014 I decided to check
Wikipedia for the strange name ENA and came across
Victoria Eugenie Julia Ena of Battenburg. To her family
and the British general public she was known by the last of her names,
as Ena.
She was a grand-daughter of Queen Victoria, her last forename was
Ena, and she was called "Princess Ena" by the British.
In 1905 King Alfonso of Spain was looking for a bride, visited
England, and met Victoria Eugenie. Princess Victoria Eugenie married
and became Queen of Spain
on 31 May 1906. The Queen gave birth to her first child in May 1907,
and was again in the news, 4 months before the birth of my mother Ena.
During circumcision of the boy, it was discovered he had inherited
haemophilia from his grandmother Victoria (though this may not have
been made public at the time). This affliction led to his death at
the age of 31 in 1938.
