Postcard showing Hopton.

The postmark is 17 Jun 1928, but the postcard looks much older than that.

James Innes writes (31 Oct 2003):

.....Postcard of Hopton: two views: top and bottom. I think that both views are taken from the same place, on Stainsbro Lane where a Windpump is marked on the 1:25000 sheet SK 25. This at the top of a rise with good views to the north.

Top: view north-east; smoke coming from Middleton Top engine-house on horizon centre-left. Large farm in foreground is Stainsbro Hall (a working farm up to post-WW2); behind it is Sycamore Farm.

Bottom: view north-west to Hopton; almshouses are visible; so is Hopton House (but dark behind ivy covered walls); tower structure at left is summerhouse/dovecote in middle of segmental wall enclosing Hopton Hall gardens (Pevsner p 163).
