My father was in D Company 6th Seaforth Highlanders he died last year
he told the story of being sent for officer training and missing the
river crossing where all of his friends died. I have a letter of a friend
of his who died dated 24th Dec l943 My father served in most of the
places mentioned in the letters you have posted and I am grateful to
you for sharing them. Richard Nile son of Eric William Nile The friend
whose letter I have was Peter Rumsey.

Hello there,
Frank Oldfield is mentioned, reminding Reg of recent binges. My
grandfather was Frank Oldfield who served in the 8th army (or similar)
and this sounds like him as he was a heavy drinker and womaniser. I
have never seen a photo of him as he left my grandma with 8 children
when the war was over. He died alone aged 68 in 1978 having lived a
strange life. I'm sure this must be him! Are there any photos with
Reg and this Frank Oldfield - as seeing a picture of him is a great
ambition of mine.
Look forward to reply.

I think that the 1915 wedding must be that of Reg's parents.
He was born in 1916.

Hi John,
There's no problem about the letters. I can perfectly understand why
Joan would want to keep them private and not want them published.
However, if she should change her mind, I would be happy to publish a
few of them, as I think our readers would enjoy the sentiment behind
them. Wish her all the best from me.

Hello John
Just to say how much I enjoyed the recent Reg Ward letters. I think
it is one of the most interesting and revealing examples of why people
should keep such material and if possible share it with others. As a
transcriber of the Carsington Registers it brought to life many of
the people I had encountered in my work. The Stevensons had lived
in Carsington for many years, the Wards were relative newcomers.
Reg Ward will live long in the memory of people he never knew.
Brian.
