"PEDIGREES"

by Thomas Norris INCE 1799-1860

Here is a transcription of the 484 pages of this Manuscript Book, made from a microfilm copy supplied by Derby Local Studies Library. In most cases abbreviations have been expanded without comment to avoid confusion. A new page numbering system is used based on the microfilm frame order. Ince's original page numbers and the DLSL photocopy reference are given in red brackets. The original pages are held at DLSL, are separated, and unfortunately do not possess a coherent numbering system.
These pages were transcribed by John Palmer, Kathryn Farrell and Sonia Addis-Smith between Oct 1999 and Feb 2000. Proof-read by Sonia and John, edited and compiled by John. Contact about uncertain words, and I will recheck microfilm of the original.

I have inserted the abstract of Mr? BUNTINGS Will to show that the persons in the pede are the same as metnd th[ere]in. I know not how the RIDGWAYS were related to the BUNTINGS. I find on 4 Nov 1621 one Robert BUNTING was mard at Wirksworth to Isabel RIDGWAY. Fras BUNTING of Wirksworth Lead Merchant bror & heir of Anthony made his Will 12 Augt 1693 whby afr gives a Legacy of £40 to his kinsman James RIDGWAY of Selly Bank in Mellor Co Derby. To his Eld son & 2 dars £20 each - & £40 to his kinsman James RIDGWAY of Broadlar- £40 to his kinsman Ralph RIDGWAY- £500 to his son Daniel RIDGWAY & £20 each to Ralphs 2 daurs- An Ann[uit]y to his kinswoman Hannah wife of Henry BULLOCK of Denby & several o[the]r leg[acie]s Sd Testator gives & devises all his real este (wch was considerable & lying in Wirkswth Ashleyhay &c) to his kinsman & servant Tristram RIDGWAY who then lived with him for 99 years if he lived so long Then rem[ainde]r to Fras to prevent contingent remrs. Then remr to the first & o[the]r sons of sd Tristram sussessively in Tail male. In default remr to James RIDGWAY bror of Tristram & his first & other sons in like Tail male Remr to Daniel son of Ralph RIDGWAY & his first & other son in like manr. Remr to Tristram in fee. Fras BUNTING died bef April 1695 for then sd Tristram RIDGWAY is admitted Ten[nan]t to Copyhd in Ashlenhay. He devised by his Will of 25 Decr 1727 to his son Tristram who in Hillary Term 9 George 2nd [1736] suffd a Reeny to Bar & dock all Estes Tail wch was declared to Enure to him in Fee. He dying s p the property came to his bror Francis who devised by his Will of 5 July 1742 to his dars one of whom died young. Mary mard John GOODWIN & Francis at difft periods sold the Estates. See several abstracts in Mr Inces office. ______________________________ Copy of Lre with this extract & Ped sent to Messrs MEREDITH & BROWN Solrs Leicester. Wirksworth 5 March 1824. Gents, I am extremely sorry that I have not sooner answered yr letter of the 1st inst but I have been engaged here in Searching ye registers & makg enqs upon the subject- On the other side I send you pede of the RIDGEWAY family drawn up from Wills abstracts of Title draft deed &c in my fars office. I cant ansr for Tristram being older than the other 2 but have placed them in the order of Mr BUNTING's will- The descent from Tristram is quite correct- I know nothing of the issue of Jas R of Mellor. The issue of Ralph as appears by Mr BUNTINGs Will were Danl Sarah & Mary-the latter both died at Wirksworth s p. the issue of Danl is conjectural & I suppose him to be far of Adam & Dorothy (& if he be the same Daniel that died at Bawtry) also far of Eleanor- If Adam R who is called neph of Mary R was not son of Danl, he must of course be the son of another Bror of Danl. yet I think it more probable that he was son of Daniel for I think if Daniel had had anr brother, he wd have been mentd in Mr BUNTINGs Will along with the other 3: Unless Ralph had any issue born afr 1693. I cannot learn what became of this Adam, Neither can I at present learn who claimed the effects of Dorothy who died in 1775. It will be very meterial to this suit to know who this Adam was & what became of him. & who were Dorothys repsentves. There's no doubt of Eleanor being dar of Daniel R of Bawtry. But I can't say whether her far Daniel be the same psn mentd in Mr BUNTINGs Will as son of Ralph, tho I think there is every reason to suppose so- The bapt marre issue birth & death of their issue I had from a person who applied to me in Sept last on behalf of a John RIDGWAY Hair dresser of ?? - about 2 or 3 yrs ago a Gent came here from Hull upon this business who said that Danl's child was born in 1708 or 9 (who left the mem afr mentd) About 6 weeks ago another Lady from Long Whatt came to me & informed me that the Hair dresser from Hull had quite declined his search- At my recomd.

Yesterday a Joseph RIDGWAY of Newton Burgland in par[ish] of Swepston in Leicester called here on his way home from Bawtry & Sheffield where he had been to search in to the Registers. I gave him a similar ped to the one sent you. I found from his account that he was upwards of 41 years of age & was the youngest of 8 brothers most of whom had issue who were sons of Samuel RIDGWAY of Newton Burgland - their registers of baptism &c are to be found at Belton & Swepston - this is the whole that I know of the matter as neither my farther or any occupant in this neighborhood are concerned professionally for any of the parties - I am totally unaquainted with the partners to the said, or the [valuation?] nature of the property - but I believe that it consists of real as well as personal property - the former consists of a house or houses in Hull. I do not know by whom the property was acquired, but from the ? at law of Daniel RIDGWAY being advertised for I should conclude the property was acquired by Daniel or some of his family. I forgot in the proper place to say that Joseph RIDGWAY told me he had seen a letter from the RIDGWAYs of Hull from which he learnt that Daniel was formerly apprentice to a sikversmith in Derby & that he afterwards resided at Sheffield & from thence removed to Bawtry - where he was buried in 1729 & that he was supposed to have married a Miss ACKLOM & that they had a son called Acklom RIDGWAY - the ACKLOMs were & are an ancient family & have several [monuments?] in Bawtry church. If Danielever lived at Sheffield it is probable that his older children might be born there & may there be registered - Joseph told me he did not search for Baptisms, only burials - but found no entries. I shall be at Sheffield myself in the course of a week or two & intend many enquiries relating to this family. Any other information that I can learn there or elsewhere I shallbe happy to communicate to you or any other person interested in this suit. I am in the habit ofmaking extracts from Deeds Wills & copying them & making them up into the form of Pedigrees hence it [arrises?] that I and not my father have been applied to [lies?] the above parties - underneath is my [clear.. Libra?] ---------------- Since sending the above I have found amongst some old papers a copy deed dated 18 Aug 1719 when Thomas BAGSHAW esq of Ridge Hall in Chapel en le Frith Co Derby Amongst [ Messages? Cands &c?] conveys all that piece or parcel of inclosed land containing by estimation seven acres be the same more or less in possession of Nicholas REDFERNE lately [pcl?] of Peaselow or Blackbrook Moore in the par[ish] of Chapel aforesaid lately purchased by said Thomas BAGSHAW of Daniel RIDGWAY of Bawtry in the Co of York To Trusts to [certificates?] there mentioned. From the circumstances of daniel RIDGWAY of Bawtry having sold before 1719 (& from his selling land [no?] to Mellor) I think it almost beyond a doubt that he is the same Daniel son of Ralph mentioned in Mr BUNTINGs Will. Copy of the Mem left by the Gent from Hull 3 or 4 years ago with Mr Thomas ROEBUCK of Wirksworth "Any information respecting either the family of Mrs HUTCHINSON or Daniel RIDGWAY supposedto be the son of Ralph RIDGWAY & in particular where & when Daniel RIDGWAY mard & with whom Daniel RIDGWAYs 1st child was born in 1708 or 1709 His wifes name was Anna Maria" copy of this

Back to MENU Transcribed by John Palmer, Dorset, England Copy of the Note or mem shewn to me by the agent of Mr RIDGWAY the Hairdresser of Hull to whom I gave a similar pedigree to the one on the first page of this sheet [see page 007c] on the 9 Sep 1823 (with the exception of Adam & the dates of Mary R & Mrs RICHARDSONs Wills Which I then knew not of). "The HARRISON family - Elizabeth HARRISON the intestate died at Hull 26 Nov 1818 wasborn in Rhode Island 25 Apr 1759 Her only brother died in London 3 Nov 1813 Miss HARRISON's mother was one Eleanor RIDGWAY she was mard to one Joseph HARRISON 25 Nov 1746 at Portsmouth New Hampshire. The present claimant is a Mrs THOMAS who claims to be thegrandchild of one Peter brother of Joseph HARRISON the father of the deceased. Miss HARRISON's mother was the dau of one Daniel RIDGWAY & was born at Bawtry in Yorkshire **31 July 1712** Daniel RIDGWAY died at Bawtry Co York 19 Dec 1721 & is supposed to have been then between 30 & 40 years of age. Daniel RIDGWAY had a **sister** called Dorothy who died at Sheffield & was burd at Wirksworth in the grave of her Aunt HUTCHINSON from whence it is supposed the RIDGWAYs above mentioned came from the neighbourhood of Wirksworth" The 2 places thus underdrawn [marked **--** above] are both incorrect for Dorothy was not the sis of Daniel but [I rather think was (later crossed through)] his daughter & sister of Adam & Eleanor (to denote which not being quite certain I have dotted the descending line for which) see pedigree by which you will also find that Daniel did not die in 1721 but was burd at Bawtry 9 July 1729 as appeared to me by copies of Bawtry register shewn to me by Joseph RIDGWAY of Newton Burgland on 4 March 1824. 25 Apr 1768 In the Dean of Lincolns copyhold court Wirksworth Dorothy RIDGEWAY is admitted on dec[eas]e of her aunt Mary RIDGEWAY to a house in Wirksworth [was then known?] & now 1824 the Swan Inn at top of Ch yd belonging to William NUTTALL of Wirksworth malster & the said admittance recites that on 19 July 1738 Tristram RIDGEWAY Gent el son & heir of Tristram & [surrendered?] said house to Mary RIDGEWAY on fee & also recites the date & purport of her Will In 1786....Miss Dorothy RIDGEWAY late of Wirksworth but then of Sheffield Co York spinster niece & devisee named in the last Will & Test of Mary RIDGEWAY late of Wirksworth aforesaid spinster ? & also niece & devisee named in the last Will & testament of sarah HUTCHINSON late of Wirksworth aforesaid widow also [dec?] who was sister of the said Mary RIDGEWAY. Conveys a farm at Ashleyhay near Wirksworth called Davies Wood to John BROMLEY of Derby breeches maker for £460. I have seen the abstract of Title to this farm now 1824 belonging to & in possession of Mr Thomas COOPER by which it appears that the Trust of Tristram RIDGEWAY Gent of Nottingham sold the same in 1732 to Mary RIDGEWAY of Wirksworth spinster who by her Will of 1738 devised it to her niece Dorothy 23 Oct 1824? I applied to Mr NUTTALL the owner of copyhold house above mentioned - to know whether Miss Dorothy RIDGEWAY sold this house or whether it was sold by her heir at Law or devisee. When he told me that his grandfather purchased of Mr Ed LEACROFT of Wirksworth Gent & that he had no earlier copies If Miss RIDGEWAY made a Will or deed of Gift of her property or if any of her representatives took out Administration. The Will or Administration will I presume be found in the [Deanery Court of Doncaster(crossed out)] in the Consistory Court of York or in [Drs Comons] London. I don't think it at all probable that they would be found at Lichfield as I think she had no effects in that diocese. If she made a deedof gift [inserted:... Estate?] it will I presume be found registered in the Registry Office at Wakefield for the Riding of Yorkshire. And if these should all fail application may be made to John CHARGE esq Chesterfield Steward of the Dean of Lincolns man here to search the Rolls to see whether Dorothy or her representatives sold the house ? NUTTALLs 22 & 23 Nov 1824 I had a personal application from a Mr Humphrey CARTWRIGHT joiner & cabinet maker Church Gate St Margarets Leicester who mard Mary Ann only child of William RIDGEWAY of the same place & parish who was son of William RIDGEWAY of same place who was son of Gilbert R baptized at Whitwick Co Leicester 9 Apr 1700 who was 2nd son of Richard RIDGEWAY & Ellen his ux Richard of Whitwick who mard Ann PARKER by whom he had 2 children who are supposed to have died without issue

Back to MENU Transcribed by Kathryn Farrell, Massachusetts, U.S.A. I gave to? Mr CARTWRIGHT a ped with copy letter to Mess MEREDITH & BROWN with most of the above remarks & observations. From Mr CARTWRIGHT's papers & memoranda there appears to be RIDGEWAYS to be found in the parish Registers of St. Margarets Leicester - Whitewick, Sheepshead - Belton - Swepston, Knighton - Ibstock & other places in Leicesterhr. 12 July 1825 John ASTELL of Belgrave gate Leicester Butcher whose brother was a RIDGEWAY applied to me for informn. He told me that CARTWRIGHT had given up his claim findg (after his seeing me) that his wife was not born in Wedlock. ASTELL purchd the pedr I had made & told me he had been at Hull & Bawtry & had obtaind about 8 certs from Wirksworth register viz the Baptism the 2 dars of Ralph RIDGEWAY. Ralph's death - The bapt of Trist R. & 5 or 6 of his childn betw 1693 & 1705. He sd he had ? the register there from 1610 to 1710 but found no RIDGEWAYS till 1681 (he havg Miss Isabel RIDGEWAY's marge with BUNTING). It appears from memorandums that ASTELL showed me that Mr THOMAS hath got possn of Miss HARRISON's psnl property by virtue of a decree in Chancery; but that the real este (some or all of wch consists of property in Bawtry) is in the hands of a Captn ACKLOM & to wch real property an Hr at law of Daniel RIDGEWAY's wanted. In March 1827 Elizabeth OLIVER of Belgrave on behalf of her sister Mrs SLATER of Ansty Pastures applied by Letter for a Ped wch I sent 1 Apl with Lre & observations as above. She alluded to her bror John ASTELL havg call'd on me & informed me that he was dead. Before I sent off Ped I made enqs of Mr Samuel WILLIAMSON aged 93 who had lived all his life in Wirksworth. He told me he very well knew Mrs HUTCHINSON her sister may & niece Dorothy, but does not recollect havg ever heard say whether Dorothy had any brors or sisters or whose dar she was. This last mem was also added to Mrs SLATER's pedigree & was sent of by post 1 Apr 1827 directed to Mrs SLATER Ansty Pastures Leicestershe to be left at the Hare & Pheasant Inn High St. Leicester. ______________________________ Notes made to a Ped of RIDGEWAY written 17 Sept 1823 for Mr John RIDGEWAY, HrDresser Lows? & Hull on the application of Mr NORTH of Loughbro' being but an imperfect ped the first that I made-- 5 June 1824 +The upper part of this ped (Meang Trist & his descendts) was taken from the Wills of the 3 RIDGEWAYS & from an Abstract of the Will of Mr Fras BUNTING (I not havg then got a copy of F B's Will as I now have) +It appears by Mr Fras BUNTING's Will aforenamed that Ralph RIDGEWAY the bror of Tristram had a son Daniel & it is most certain that Sarah HUTCHINSON & Mary RIDGEWAY were daurs of Ralph & consequently sisrs of Daniel & ifso observe Mrs HUTCHINSON died in 1758 aged 77 yrs wch exactly agrees with her bapt in 1681. It is sd in the deed of 1766 made by Dorothy RIDGEWAY that she was heir & devisee in the Will of her Aunts Mrs HUTCHINSON & Miss Mary RIDGEWAY. Consequently they made wills wch are probably at Lichfield. and from this Dorothy being called their neice. She co[ul]d not be sister of Danl, but I rather suppose her to have been his daur (& if so sisr to Eleanor who md J HARRISON & altho she sho be daur of Danl; yet it is possible she might have a bror of that name tho I think it co[ul]d not be her bror that was bur at Bawtry 19 Decr 1721 (sho be burd 9 July 1729) but rather her father Daniel (admitting her to be a daur of a Danl). As I have a doubt of this circumstce I have denoted it by dottg the descendg line from Daniel to Dorothy. [-] This description & recital (unr Dorothy's name) is taken from the dft Deed dated 1766 in my possn. This premes viz the Dove Wood farm are freehd in Ashleyhay & have since passed from Gilbert PIDCOCK of Exeter Change London to a Thomas COOPER now of Doves Wood farmer- probably of Mr COOPER's Deed or Abstract co[ul]d be lookd at, it might be seen how this Dorothy became possd whether by devise from her Aunts by her far or in what or deanner?. [crescent symbol] (at Eleanor) This acedr is taken from the Minute or Note geven to me this day & attatched to this pedigree. From 3 yrs ago a Gent I bel from Hull was makg enqs here about the RIDGEWAYS & he left the follg mem with the person (Mr & Mrs ROEBUCK) of whom he was enq "Any &c as on er side) 13 Apr 1828 wrote to Mrs SLATER for £1 Note & inford her in a P S that I had gather'd no addl information except that James RIDGEWAY of Newton Bayland calling on me on his way to Mellor to search register there about 3 or 4 months ago.
