The contraction "B.C." is often used in these
letters, and I couldn't think what this stood for,
so I sent the email below to the "Brains Trust" at DERBYSGEN,
and got the following reply:
My guess would be Benevolent Club. It rings a bell from the 1930s.
Eric Millward

A man aged 26, single, is serving in India during WW2,
and writes regularly to his Mum in Middleton, Derbyshire.
He regularly mentions something called "B.C." Does anyone
know what this stands for. I just can't find out. Here is the context:
1. I suppose you'll have to tell the B.C. soon that I've had a little
increase in pay.
2. When next you hear from B.C. you will have to tell them that my rank has
altered,
and that I've got an increase of 8d a day - it will probably mean that their
allowance
will be out a bit, and you won't be quite so well off, but you can use more
of my money
if you want it because I shall be saving more at this end.
3. So you know at last that I've got my L.A.C - it dosn't do to lag too far
behind
the rest of the crowd, altho' financially, you won't be quite so well off
because B.C.
will make another reduction. We can even this matter up though, because you
need
not save so much for me at home, because I'm able to save more for myself
out here now.
4. Have you heard from B.C. lately, which reminds me to ask if you've heard
from the
other B.C."as was".
5. I shall be interested to know how much you get from B.C. this time - I
suppose there
will be a bigger reduction, but you have no need to bother about saving
anything for me,
as I'm doing quite well out here.
6. So the B.C. allowance keeps turning up, does it? It seems small compared
with what
it was at first, but, I'm earning more now, so that evens things up.

From Peter Harvey "Military Man" via ebay 21dec2015
I don't know any of the Evans family and have not had contact with them,
sometimes this happens with the items that I sell but not in this case.
I purchased the first lot of these items 18 months or so ago at auction,
a general sale in Leicestershire mixed with some ephemera from WW2.
The others have been cropping up with general ephemera dealers, so at
some point the whole lot was obviously sold and that trade split them up.
Don't think I have any others at the moment but will see those dealers
in the new year back at some of the collectors fairs around the central
Midlands.
Regards
Peter
