Manuscript family tree of the Gell family, whose ancestral home was Hopton Hall, Wirksworth, Derbyshire. Believed to have been compiled circa 1849 by John Philip Gell, whose name is the final one to appear in the original manuscript. In that year, he married Eleanor Isabella Franklin, only child of the famous Arctic exlorer, Sir John Franklin. The neat ink manuscript of the original family tree extends over a folio sheet (watermarked 'J.Whatman 1833'), opening to 20" x 15". It has been added to in pencil by another hand and partially extended upto 1877. On the reverse is a contemporary manuscript text explaining the object of producing the family tree, which was to prove that the Gell family were descendants of Henry Chichele (1362-1443) Archbishop of Canterbury and founder of All Souls College, Oxford. Such descendants were entitled to become candidates with preference for Fellowships of All Souls College! This item along with several others was purchased some years ago from a member of the Gell family. It is slightly worn but its character is not diminished by its neat, contemporary reinforcement along the reverse of the centre fold by a strip of perforated selvedge from the edge of a sheet of Queen Victoria 1d. red stamps (minus the stamps).

The object of this Pedigree, independently of its showing the Family of GELL of Middleton and Wirksworth, is to prove the Kindred of Philip [122], son of Philip Gell [090] and Honor Borrow [091], and his Issue, to Henry Chichele Abp of Cant: and Founder of Allsouls College, Oxford; by which they are entitled to become candidates with preference for Fellowships there. It was an easy matter of curiosity collaterally to ascend to the Kings of England from Edmund Ld Grey de Wilton [022]. The Chichele pedigree, from Sir George Fleetwood [037] upward, is extant in the "Stemmata Chicheleana", and downward, in the pedigree of Thomas Borough Esq: of Chetwynd Park, Shropshire; which is also recorded in the Herald's Office.

The arms now borne by these Gells were granted, 6 March 1731, to Daniel Gell [072], his descendants, and those of his father, Ralph [054], and his Uncle Thomas [045]. He himself died without issue, June 1763, will dated 24 Dec 1762, cod. Ap 1763, and is buried, together with his two wives, in Westminster Abbey, west cloister. He married first Elizabeth Higton, and secondly Margaret; dau. of Nicolas Claggett, D.D. Bishop of Exeter, who died 1783. He was bapt. 7 Feb 1687. The Arms are, "Parted per bend argent & gules, a Rose between two mullets of six points, in bend, countercharged; and for the Crest, on a wreath, a Greyhound pean, about the neck a collar argent, and thereon a Rose between two mulletts of six points gules." See Copy of Grant.
The Arms of the Family of Lowe, which came in by Thomas Gell [063] 1707, are,
    1. Modern, of Alderwasley; - Gules, a Wolf passant argent.
    2. Antient, Ancestors to the Lowes of Denby, Locko, & Alderwasley: - Azure, a Buck tripping proper.
    3. Came in by Thomas Lowe, Hen:VII & VIII, who married the dau. & heir of Fawne; of Alderwastley; - Argent, A Bugle stringed sable, between three crescents of the same, on each a Bezant. The manor of Aldersley was granted to him by the Duchy of Lancaster.
    4. Came in by Lawrence Lowe, Hen: VI Ed IV, who married the dau: & heir of Rosell, of Denby; Argent, three roses gules, barbed & seeded proper.
Qu?: - Asburn, earlier than records: Argent, on a Fesse engrailed gules, Three molets or, between three crescents gules. See monument in Wirksworth Church.

The arms of the Family of Dod, Cheshire, which came in by Philip Gell [134], 1815, are, Argent; on a Fesse gules, three crescents Or, between two bars wavy sable.

It is stated in the Preface to the Stemmata Chicheleana, 1765, that whenever the College of All Souls have refused a Claimant, pleading consanguinity to the Founder, they have been overruled by their Visitor, when the Case has come regularly before Him. In 1762 one Claimant of the fourteenth Generation and another of the eleventh were admitted; as several had been of the 11th, 12th & 13th and 14th before; though the tenth was in this case, in 1761, attempted to be pleaded as a legal Limit. And the Visitor having hitherto declined making any Declaration either for or against a limitation, the Practice goes to maintain the Virtue of Consanguinity as indefinite, and the Vacancies seldom more than two in a year. A claimant of the 16th Gen: was admitted, 1765, Tab 451? - do 1769 - do 1773, Tab 456. Three also of the fifteenth appear before 1775. The Descents are reckoned from Thomas [004] the Father of the Abp: - William [007] being of the first, John [012] of the second, etc wherefore Philip Gell [122], the s[on] of Honor Borrow [091], is of the thirteenth. In the Stemm[ata] there is an evident error in the numbering from Anne Tattershall [021] downwards.

Thomas Borrow, the Grandson of Isaac, in case his own children died without issue, devised his estates in tail to Lieut. Col. Philip Bainbrigge and his heirs, for ever; which Philip was Grandson of Anne, dau of Isaac Borrough. Another daughter Elizabeth married Dale of Ashbourne.

Glenis Stewart Booth writes
Dear Mr.Palmer,
I have just been checking the Gell Pedigree and find that the compiler was not aware of the connection between the Gell family and my own ancestors the Buxton's of Carsington. John and Agnes Gell's son Ralph (no.35 in pedigree) m.Elizabeth Buxton 21.6.1605 in Carsington. John and Agnes's other children,Richard,Elizabeth and poss.Margaret were also married there about that time (all info on D.F.H.S. Carsington P.R.'s webpage.) Elizabeth Buxton's parents are given as Edmund and Ellen, who I believe to be my direct ancestors in the Buxton line. I am strongly convinced from the naming patterns that the Gell's and the Buxton's may well be linked more than once, probably further back in time and the Ralph at the head of the Gell of Hopton line may even be the link. Agnes, although a popular name, appears several times in both lines as does Richard etc. Just thought it of interest in case no link shown in any other listings.

I have been an avid fan of your amazing site for many years - my links to Wirksworth are almost enumerable - particularily through the Rag/Ragge/Wragg, Wigley,Lowe,Toplis etc.lines (and much much more) but it is many years since I was in the area so find the info that you supply absolutely invaluable. Hope this will not add anything daunting to your stockpile of work - but the Buxton's have been a pet project of mine for quite some time - still have not completely cracked the Carsington years though and still struggling with the link to Hob Knoll/Buxton origins.

best wishes, Glenis Stewart
