  • CODE column serves as a unique reference to each entry, eg:W001a
    Prefixes are:

  • RELATION column gives the relation to the declared Head of the household. (Col 9)
  • CON column gives marital condition, such as: M=Married, S=Single, W=Widow or Widower (Col 10)
  • AGE column shows the age declared, which is intended to be the age last birthday. (Cols 11,12)
  • SEX column indicates gender, M=male, F=female
  • OCCUPATION column contains following contractions: (Col 13)
    "FWK"= Frame Work Knitter, "J'man"= Journeyman
  • WHERE BORN column gives the declared Place of Birth. (Col 16). Places within Derbyshire show no county,
    outside Derbyshire places use 3-letter Chapman Codes
  • HEALTH column states whether: (Col 17)
    (1) Deaf-and-Dumb
    (2) Blind
    (3) Lunatic
    (4) Imbecile, feeble-minded
  • COMMENT column includes words that are too long to fit into other columns, also transcriber's comments in square brackets.

  • Whether Employer, worker or own account. (Col 14)
  • Whether Working at Home. (Col 15)
