The Recruiting Sergeant (The Dale)
|
"
You can detect on the photo the stub of the fixing for the pub sign high
above the front doorway. On the left hand side of the photo can be seen
the double gateway to the yard known locally as 'piggy hawley's yard'.
Mr Hawley was a pork butcher and the yard
was where the pigs were slaughtered and butchered.

The Green Man (Pig Market/West End)
see 1887 item 10
|
"
One of your existing photos on the site, which I now cannot find,
depicts carts and 'at ease' soldiers. The background to that photo
should be very similar to this one. The old one you have clearly shows
the board above the front door which would have indicated who the
landlord was.

The Greyhound (Godfrey Hole)
|
"
The garages on the right hand side of the building are new. The gable end
once proudly advertised the beers available. Non of the census returns
mention a public house at Godfrey Hole. Any ideas why? This Greyhound
should not be confused with the one which once traided in Wirksworth
Market Place.

The vehicle is a permanent fixture. I visit Wirksworth on DCFC home
match days and will try to get a better picture then.
