These Mineral accounts were sent to me by David Shaw of Malton,
in the form of photocopies of two letters from Wirksworth,
dated 1827 and 1829. They are from Richard Hurt, Mineral Agent,
and addressed to Mr G R Barker, Admiralty, London. They seem to
be invoices for Losses on three Mines: Hannage Sough, Nightingales
in the Leas, and Thomsons in the Leas. Barker stands for 1/48 or
1/12 of the Profits, but only losses are reported, and he must pay
his share. Hurt blames "the indifferent state of the Mines at this
period" and bemoans the fact that "we are expected by the
Customs of the Country to keep them in Workmanship".
Richard Hurt (1785-1851) came from a wealthy family. His mother was
Susanna, dau of Sir Richard Arkwright. Seven neighbouring memorials
