GAYLER Birth cups 1847-1851

My family has had 3 "birth cups" for around 100 years, but has never known whom they represent. Finally I sent my question up to Gendesk QueryBoard and got the excellent answer below. I put this page on my website on 30 Jul 04. On 20 Feb 05, I got an "out-of-the-blue" email from a relative together with a Pedigree of the 3 people on the "birth cups". Isn't the Internet amazing! But the appearance of a relative put me in a moral dilemma.

My question to GENDESK - QueryBoard

I have 3 cups celebrating the births of siblings.
    They read:
  • Louisa GAYLER born Decr 16th 1847.
  • Caroline GAYLER born Decr 26th 1849.
  • Edward George GAYLER born Decr 12th 1851.

I have no information about Nationality.
Can anyone help me trace these unknown sisters and their brother???

Answer from GENDESK - QueryBoard

Dear John,

First, I would like to thank you for the opportunity to research this interesting query. I hope the information that I provide here will at least start you off with building up a full picture around your very attractive birth cups.

I managed to find potential birth registrations for the three GAYLER siblings, using a combination of the partial transcript provided online by FreeBMD at www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl , and a complete version on microfiche at my local Family History Centre.

Births
- Mar Qtr 1848: GAYLER Louisa - Taunton R.D. Vol X Pg 447
- Mar Qtr 1850: GAYLER Caroline - Keynsham R.D. Vol XI Pg 118
- Mar Qtr 1852: GAYLER Edward George - Keynsham R.D. Vol 5c Pg 763

The parishes covered by these RDs can be seen by referring to GENUKI's list of Registration Districts in Somerset at:
www.fhsc.org.uk/genuki/REG/som.htm

I found this family in the 1851 Census of Somerset, from Gordon Beavington's transcript available on CD-ROM from: www.mycensuses.com/Somerset-New-Edition.htm [Courtesy of AP]

William 4 Taunton
Louisa 3 Taunton
Caroline 1 Keynsham
COX George 23 Plumber & Glazier Pangbourne
----------------------------------------

I then checked back in the GRO Index for the birth of the oldest child, and found the following:

Birth
- Sep Qtr 1846: GAYLER William - Taunton R.D. Vol X Pg 430

I should note that the dates of the index entries differ slightly from the actual birth dates, because the entries were indexed by the General Record Office (GRO) in order of the registration date, rather than actual date of birth, and the registration often took place several weeks later. This results in the December birth dates actually appearing in the GRO indexes for the March Quarter of the following year.

I managed to track Edward & Catherine GAYLER through the 1881 and 1891 Census records, as follows:

--------------------------------------
1881 Census: Bath Rd, Bath Place, Wolverhampton STS PRO Ref. RG11/2798 Fol 58 Pg 36:

---------------------------------------

These suggest that Catherine died between 1881 and 1891, and that daughter Caroline - possibly mis-transcribed as Catherine, and shown as a daughter-in-law of Edward, rather than daughter - had married someone by the name of HOWEL. I checked FreeBMD once again, and came up with the following suitable entry for Catherine's death:

Death
- Jun Qtr 1890: GAYLER Catherine, aged 70 - Stafford R.D. Vol 6b Pg 2

However, I was unable to find a suitable marriage for Edward & Catherine GAYLER. Presumably, it has not yet been transcribed. Nor was I able to find a marriage for Caroline until I first located Caroline in the 1891 Census:

-----------------------------------
1891 Census: 24 Falkland Street, Wolverhampton, Staffordshire PRO Ref. RG12/2232/137/8/44:

-------------------------------------

And referring back to FreeBMD:

Marriage
- Jun 1880: HOWELL James & GAY*** Caroline - Birmingham R.D. Vol 6d Pg 121

Presumably the transcriber had difficulty deciphering the last few letters of the bride's surname, and it appears that the census enumerator also stated her birth place incorrectly in 1891. I found some references to James HOWELL in contemporary Trade Directories, using the University of Leicester's Digital Historival Directories site, at: www.historicaldirectories.org
Author's comment: The enumerator wont have stated her birth place incorrectly the person giving the enumerator that information gave it incorrectly and then only because their knowledge may have not extended far enough back.

The following marriage is taken from the British Vital Records Index, published on CD-ROM by the Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS) in 1998:

- GAYLER, William (aged 23, son of Edward GAYLER) m: 28 Apr 1870 St Nicholas, Brighton, Sussex Margaret Helen JACKSON (aged 26, dau of Frederick Cornwall JACKSON) [Source: FHL Number 1067131]

The International Genealogical Index (IGI), also published by the LDS, but available on their FamilySearch web site at: www.familysearch.org/ shows that Margaret was born in 1842:

- Margaret Helen JACKSON b. 1 Jul 1842 bapt. 7 Sep 1842 St Mark, Kennington, London, dau of Frederick Cornwell [sic] & Margaret JACKSON [Source: IGI Batch #P015571]

William's first wife died in 1877 in Yorkshire, according to the following entry from FreeBMD:

Death
- Sep Qtr 1877: GAYLER Margaret Helen, aged 35 - Ripon R.D. Vol 9a Pg 54

and he remarried in London in 1884:

Marriage
- Sep Qtr 1884: GAYLER William & CHRISMAS Ellen Amelia - Kensington R.D. Vol 1a Pg 292

Some of William and his second wife's children are shown in the FreeBMD index:

Births
- Mar Qtr 1886: GAYLER Ellen Beatrice - Paddington R.D. Vol 1a Pg 8
- Mar Qtr 1887: GAYLER Nora Noel - Paddington R.D. Vol 1a Pg 17
- Dec Qtr 1889: GAYLER Rita Janet - Guildford R.D. Vol 2a Pg 71
- Jun Qtr 1891: GAYLER Maria Laura V - Bristol R.D. Vol 6a Pg 40

Deaths
- Jun Qtr 1898: GAYLER Nora Noel - Marylebone R.D. Vol 1a Pg 400

And I found some entries for William GAYLER in London directories:

- Post Office London Directory (1895) Gayler William, 43 Carlton hill, St Johns Wood, N.W. London
- Post Office London Directory (1899) Gayler William, 43 Carlton hill, St Johns Wood, N.W. London

as well as a transcript of a paper about tax reform which appears to have been co-authored by William GAYLER in 1905:
"Report of the Departmental Committee on Income tax", by the H.M.Treasury.Income Tax Committee, Primrose, Sir H.W.; Buxton, Sydney; Bonsor, H.Cosmo O.; Murray, A.; Gayler, William, publ. 1905. [Source: BOPCRIS web site. www.bopcris.ac.uk/bop1900/ref119.html ]

Perhaps most interesting of all, I found someone else interested in this particular William GAYLER, although it is not clear whether they are related, or merely doing some academic research. The following comes from the "Contacts Sought" page of the web site of the Somerset & Dorset Family History Society, at www.sdfhs.org/Contact6.htm#gayler :

GAYLER, Taunton, Som. mid 19C
"GAYLER. I am interested in William Gayler who was born in Taunton circa 1847 and died in London in 1907. He became Chief Inspector of Taxes in the Inland Revenue. Does anyone have any details of either his birth, baptism or 1851 census details? Any extra info e.g. educational details would be very welcome too. Reference 1392"

The site does not list email addresses of members, but provides a facility whereby you may email the society for their contact details.

I can find no sign of either Edward George or Louisa GAYLER after 1851/1852. It is possible that they did not marry and have children, although I could not be sure of that. Nor was I able to locate a birth or baptism record for Edward GAYLER Senior, or a marriage for him and Catherine. However, I have managed to build up the following provisional outline for the GAYLER family, for whom the birth cups we made in the mid-19th Century.

I hope that you are happy with the outline of your GAYLER family provided above. If you have any questions about the material presented, please do not hesitate to ask in the form of a follow-up comment. If you do get in touch with any other researchers of this family, we hope you will return to post some details of your successes here on the QueryBoard.

Dear John

These cups are extremely interesting and belonged to my family,
being the sisters and brother of my great grandfather
John Henry Gayler. John Henry is not listed on Fred's search,
he was born in Bath in the last quarter of 1853. I have only
just tracked his birth down and I am waiting for the certificate
to arrive. I have no further information than that of Fred with
the regard to what happened to Louisa or Edward George I have
not been able to find any details. However, it does appear that
my line maybe the only Gaylers from this family. We seem to have
been inundated with girls, my brother being the only boy to
carry the name down. My brother Peter lives in Bournemouth.
How you would have come by the cups will possibly still remain a
mystery, however I am extremely interested in them and if you
could bear to part with them, my family would love to purchase
them from you.
I look forward to your reply
Regards

Further comment by Margaret Starnes, 20 Mar 2005:

I have been doing some more research and I have now established that
Edward George died 29/11/1876 in Gloucester, so it would seem that as
William had only daughters, the only surviving Gayler's are those
descended from John Henry.

Just to confirm that John was the only male from Edward Gayler 1818
to have a son and that my brother Peter and his family are the only
Gayler direct line.
