From: Mary Temple Hi John ----- You say on the Derby list you found Doxey's from the IGI in a special way - in order to get the place the name originated from. Am extremely interested, can you tell us please. --- Mary Temple Hello Mary, I've just put a page about my "DOXEY density" exercise on the Wirksworth website, you can see the the results at: http://www.wirksworth.org.uk/B17-DOXY.htm The work took about 2 days, and needed my Word Processor and Database. My grandfather DOXEY was very interested in his surname and all his life believed that they originated from Hugenot refugees called D'ORSAY. He couldn't have been more wrong, the name comes from mid-Derbyshire in an area about 2 miles across, where they have been from before 1550. First I downloaded 5,000 IGI records, from the link given on the website page, using my laptop Notepad in 25 blocks of 200 records at a time. These blocks were then united in a single Word Processor file. Second, the WP file was edited to give it the right format to export to the database. My WP has an "Exchange Facility" which is great for doing bulk editing. This needs ingenuity and care, but saves a huge amount of time. The object was to divide each record up into fields using field separator characters (I used the tab because it appears nowhere else). I was able to find no way of reliably separating date and abode fields using exchange facility, so it had to be done by hand. This took a couple of hours. Third, I prepared a new database for accepting the WP data. the fields used were: Record number, Firstname, Surname, Gender, Event, Date and Abode. This is the same order as the fields appeared on the IGI of course, and the only data needed for doing a density study. Fourth, the WP data was imported to the Database. If some of the data is in the wrong place/wrong format, the DB stops loading and protests. Then you have to find whats wrong, go back to step 3, correct and repeat. Thats why care is needed with step 3! Fifth, once all the data is in the DB, a quick cheer is permitted. Then a small DPL (Database Programming Language) macro is needed. DPL is a bit like Basic. The program is simple, and just counts the number of occurences of records with the same Abode. The data needs to be indexed on Abode, then the DPL macro run. In the DOXEY case, there were 400 different Abodes. Abodes and Occurences were separated from the "blank Abode" data, and indexed on occurences, largest at the top. This list is what is shown on the Wirksworth website page (see link above). Sixth, the list of Abodes is worked through by hand, listing the "top 10". Account must be taken that one Abode may be described in 10 different ways on the original IGI data. Seventh, here comes the payoff for perhaps 4 hours work. The results are plotted on a map. In the DOXEY case, 58% of the Abodes came from an area two miles across. Other "density groupings" were nowhere in the DOXEY league. In particular, there were no significant groupings round the placename "Doxey" in Staffordshire, which shoots down a popular theory that the surname is named after the place. Another approach is to get an estimate of the population of places in the "top 10" from the 1801 Census. Then divide occurences by population to get density! The idea is that density will be highest at the place where the surname originated. In the DOXEY case, by far the highest density is at Middleton- by-Wirksworth (because it is a small village) while nearby Wirksworth is a town. Although this approach does not PROVE the surname came from here, I think it is a very powerful hint that needs a lot of explaining away if any other origin for DOXEY is to be taken seriously. Eighth, its no good doing all this work unless you tell other people, and leave some kind of record behind. So I wrote this webpage (took about 1 day), and sent an email to DERBYSGEN (5 minutes).
